Suicide Prevention Day – September 10th
“I have been in mental health and caring for young people for a couple of years, and I wanted to highlight to everyone the enormity of Suicides in the UK alone, and what we could all be doing to help change someone’s life, no matter how small.“ Rhea Spencer
Every year companies and organisations come together to help raise awareness of how many people in the world die by suicide.
Look out for signs that someone is not coping: hopelessness, uncontrolled rage, seeking revenge, acting reckless or engaging in risky activities, feeling trapped, increased alcohol or drug use, withdrawals from family, friends & society, anxiety, agitation, unable to sleep and dramatic mood changes.
Facts & Figures
An estimated 703,000 people die by suicide worldwide every year; that’s 55% of people in the world! The global suicide rate is twice as high among men as women, and over 50% of all deaths by suicide occur before the individual turns 50years old.
Depression can completely take over someone’s life and make them feel alone and unwanted; it is twenty times more likely for an individual to commit suicide if they struggle with depression. In over 20 countries, suicide is still illegal and can result in individuals being punished by legal penalties that range from a minor fine or small prison sentence to life imprisonment.
What can you do?
We all play a role in each other’s mental health, no matter how small. Sometimes you do not know how to make a difference or what you can do to help the person in need, but being an ear for them to talk and giving time and space can help them, whether it’s your family member, closest friends or even a colleague at work.
People are often reluctant to talk to someone about their mental health as they fear not knowing what to say. However, individuals are not looking for specific advice, so you don’t need to worry about what to say; being empathetic, compassionate, have a genuine concern, and maybe some knowledge of resources and a desire to help them is key to preventing the worst.
For individuals who feel distressed, having a strong sense of connection is a prime part of preventing them from committing suicide. A connection can be in many forms, including friends & family, social, work, nature or art activities. Being engaged in activities can help distract the mind from difficulties and help lift the mood for those suffering from suicidal thoughts. Being able to offer a struggling individual a connection and opportunity to raise their mood and for some time distract them from their everyday struggles in reality.
