Digital Strategy linking business    components

We all waste time, have inefficiencies that we somehow manage and find it a struggle to stand tall amongst our competitors, furthermore, we could all benefit from managing resource more efficiently.

Who needs to read this article?
• Board Members who need to realise money can be made from linking business components
• Managing Directors who need their finger on the pulse to prove the effectiveness
• Innovation managers who need to find ways they can make their organisation more streamlined.

Reluctance for the change?
When any organisation becomes stuck in a routine, it can be challenging to alter this well-established course and make improvements, but your business needs the skills and confidence to seize the opportunities digital technology will bring whatever your business type and size.

The reluctance today to change will almost certainly impact on the future of your business. Remaining disjointed isolated, static and inefficient business will see projects and frameworks being awarded to companies who show their creatively efficient savings both on internal labour and external support, or even worse; found in breach receiving a prosecution or compensation claim.

Wasted Resource
The introduction of a digital strategy not only brings SMART value to your business but also has the potential to enhance client liaison increasing revenue.

This article is written to show how a misguided way of thinking can cost businesses tens of thousands of wasted time and also by not creating efficiencies, can impact on your supply chain partnering.

SMART Technologies have given birth a new revolution in the way we communicate, collaborate and manage time:
• SMART Phones
• SMART Motorways
• SMART TVs
• SMART Meters
• BIM and SMART Cities

Collaboration and management of information and communication is no longer a novelty used for companies to get a gold star at the yearly office awards, this SMART thinking needs to be embraced in all areas of your organisation.

We already have SMART individuals in our organisations creating small pockets of efficiency, but to bring maximum benefit, we need everyone to use the same standards and processes creating a free-flowing collaboration of information across all disciplines minimising wastage and errors.

Did you know? SMART. Stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology

Saving 100s of man-hours and preventing a £105K fine
A recent prosecution resulted in a business receiving a second fine of £105K for failing to manage risk for an employee. I do not wish to probe into the accident, so let’s concentrate on how NOT using the advantages of technology increased risk, which ultimately resulted in a reoccurrence.

6 months after the initial accident (fine unknown), there were still valued members of the organisation who weren’t fully aware of the original accident, or the precautions needed to prevent a recurrence in the business.

This was due to a failure in notifying the relevant staff members in sufficient time, as particular workers were still operating to the replaced standards and procedures, but this particular injured Person (IP) wasn’t aware of that…

The business procedure following an accident/incident was to create the notification and improvement notice. Then an administrator would email out to a pre-populated group that included underlined bold text

“PLEASE ENSURE YOU TICK YOU HAVE READ THIS CORRESPONDANCE”

So, the company created a safety notification and improvement notice based on the incident 6 months prior; the notice was:

  • Distributed via email to the high-level teams, who reviewed
    • Then emailed out to another pre-defined group of store managers
      • The store managers then individually completed a further review before passing on to their line managers
        • Line managers/supervisors echoed on to the staff
          • Also, copies printed and placed local notice boards.

Maybe a majority of the people who received this notification did actually READ, but the company had no evidence or proof to repulse the breach of failing to manage the risk to employees.
This process, which you may even use today, was the foundation of this business receiving another comparable prosecution.

This agreed process cost the business many man-hours in the building, reviewing and sending and failed to contain sufficient closure to prove compliance with the current UK Health and Safety law.
If the organisation had the ability to get notifications and/or improvement notices along with company standards filtered out to all members of staff instantly along with the capacity to ensure revised documents have been READ and UNDERSTOOD, the accident would have been prevented and the company wouldn’t have faced a prosecution… that’s what Self-Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology will produce in your organisation.
