Is mental health a part of your daily routine?
At Safety PAL (PLAN ACT LEARN), we always look forward to mental health awareness week so that we can present the world with new health and wellbeing upgrades.
This week we want to concentrate on incorporating mental health into your daily routine. Many people tend to forget about their mental health and how important it is to have some ‘me time’. Even taking 10 minutes out of your day to do something for yourself could be anything; a walk, a bath, doing your nails, going to the gym, or sitting and watching your favourite film or TV program.
Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week. Every seven years, a survey is done in England to measure the number of people with different mental health problems. It was last published in 2016; some of the reported figures are as shown:
- 7.8 in 100 people suffer from mixed anxiety and depression.
- 4.4 in 100 people have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- 5.9 in 100 people suffer from a generalised anxiety disorder.

Balancing all aspects of your life
Balancing your social life, work-life and family life can be difficult; it is something that many people find challenging, and it is!
Here are a few things that can help you;
- Is letting go of that perfectionism, you’re getting older, life gets more complicated, and that perfectionism becomes out of reach. If the habit is not unchecked, it can become destructive to your mental and physical health.
- Technology has helped our lives in many ways, but it has also created an expectation of constant accessibility. Your workday never ends, but turning your phone off and spending time with your family or yourself can offer that bit of a well-deserved break after a hard day’s work.
- Exercise is an effective stress reducer; it pumps endorphins through the body. Meditation helps lift your mood by putting you into a meditative state.
Sometimes we fall into a rut and feel that our habits are stuck there. Take a bird’s eye view of your life and ask yourself: What changes could make your life easier?
Mental Health Stigma
Over the years, the stigma around mental health has decreased, but it’s still there, and some people still believe that mental health is a weakness and something to be ashamed of; But modern days go on, and it’s not seen as much as a weakness but normality and a stepping stone through life.
People who have not experienced mental health can struggle to understand how someone with mental health feels, and it’s like a weight around your neck that you can lift above your head no matter how hard you try. Mental health is not a burden, and you can’t let it define you.

Our physical appearance effects our mental health
Over 1/3 of adults in the UK have experienced anxiety and depression due to their physical appearance and body image.
Action is needed to build and promote a positive body image and support good mental health and wellbeing in our bodies.
- Effective regulation of how body image is portrayed.
- The need for commitment from social media companies to play a critical role in promoting body kindness.
- Taking a public health approach to body image by training frontline health and education staff.
- Individually being more aware of how we can take care of ourselves and others about our body image.
