Doing more on Mental Health
0.5 million workers suffering from work-related stress, anxiety and depression (new and long-standing) in 2016/17

What is mental health?
The mind.org.uk states:
In many ways, mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it.
Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the ways that you need and want to live your life.
But if you go through a period of poor mental health you might find the ways you’re frequently thinking, feeling or reacting become difficult, or even impossible, to cope with. This can feel just as bad as a physical illness, or even worse.
You surely understand that experiencing mental health problems is often upsetting, confusing and frightening, even though today awareness and help is increasing, people inherently find talking openly about problems as an intimidating task. Mental Health Stigma discourages a person to talk to others under a normal working day.
I don’t wish to tell you everything you need to know about mental health, I’m not a health professional, you can use the plethora of websites (some below) to increase your knowledge if required.
What I would like to do, as an Engineer is to help!
So how can we better manage mental health?
It has been proved our employees do not feel comfortable raising mental health issues, be it at work or home.
It is apparent we need to do more than just posters dotted around the office, emails or texts sent out raising awareness. We also need to understand there is a cost impact (management may not have a budget) our business has to face in raising awareness campaigns, organising stand down days and one-to-one sessions.
I know in the long term, businesses will save hugely, but they might be aware! – The annual cost of work-related injury and new cases of ill health in 2016/17 was £14.9 billion.
If a supervisor is directly asking the employee questions even though these are to help, this can still be deemed as interrogation and may present the scenario they are guilty.
We need to engineer out the problem… the problem being the people will not open up and ask a colleague, team member or supervisor for direct help, they will struggle with increasing anxiety and stress.
How Safety PAL does it?
Safety PAL does its utmost to engineer out the problem instead of engineering in a solution
Our proven technology allows you to add mental health, stress awareness and or anxiety videos (we have a library if you need any, but many are available on .gov sites) which can be watched by any employee at any time / anywhere.
These videos provide a passive experience; they do not need active responses nor are they met by the resistance that can be seen from management involvement.
Furthermore: The employee is able to consume the information and make concepts more accessible.
Our brains are far more engaged by storytelling than a list of facts.
How easy is it with Safety PAL?
• Upload your video (see above)
• Add multiple choice question/s
The worker can click ‘view’ anytime/anywhere, managers also have the ability to specifically invite individual people.
Management can create a report on who has watched, review the persons Q&A and then if they believe an intervention is needed, they can visit the worker and have a general chat without having the perceived interrogation.
Safety PAL also includes a risk database, incident reporting tools and simple one-click communication, and is available in 19 different languages.
