What is mental health?

The states:


In many ways, mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it.
Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the ways that you need and want to live your life.


But if you go through a period of poor mental health you might find the ways you’re frequently thinking, feeling or reacting become difficult, or even impossible, to cope with. This can feel just as bad as a physical illness, or even worse.


You surely understand that experiencing mental health problems is often upsetting, confusing and frightening, even though today awareness and help is increasing, people inherently find talking openly about problems as an intimidating task. Mental Health Stigma discourages a person to talk to others under a normal working day.


I don’t wish to tell you everything you need to know about mental health, I’m not a health professional, you can use the plethora of websites (some below) to increase your knowledge if required.

What I would like to do, as an Engineer is to help!


So how can we better manage mental health?

It has been proved our employees do not feel comfortable raising mental health issues, be it at work or home.

It is apparent we need to do more than just posters dotted around the office, emails or texts sent out raising awareness. We also need to understand there is a cost impact (management may not have a budget) our business has to face in raising awareness campaigns, organising stand down days and one-to-one sessions.
I know in the long term, businesses will save hugely, but they might be aware! – The annual cost of work-related injury and new cases of ill health in 2016/17 was £14.9 billion.

If a supervisor is directly asking the employee questions even though these are to help, this can still be deemed as interrogation and may present the scenario they are guilty.

We need to engineer out the problem… the problem being the people will not open up and ask a colleague, team member or supervisor for direct help, they will struggle with increasing anxiety and stress.
